Do Walnuts Make a Tasty Meat?

Walnut Meat

Absolutely! We’re accustomed to seeing walnuts in bread, cookies, and trail mix, but now walnuts have become the “meat” in dishes that would ordinarily feature ground beef, such as hamburger patties, tacos, meatballs, and lasagna.

California walnuts are exceptionally versatile and will fool carnivores and vegetarians alike.

Get Creative!

Raw walnut meat has a nice crumbly texture and is full of flavor. Easily customize it by changing up the herbs and spices to suit your family’s tastes. The walnut meat base can go in any direction you desire. Here are some suggestions to get you started

For American flavor: Add 3/4 teaspoon garlic powder, 3/4 teaspoon onion powder, 1/4 teaspoon ground thyme, salt and pepper to taste, and 2 teaspoons of water to a mixture of 2 cups ground walnuts and 2 cups ground mushrooms or cooked lentils.

For Mexican flavor: Add 2 tablespoons cumin, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, and 1/2 teaspoon chipotle powder (or cayenne) to a mixture of 2 cups ground walnuts and 2 cups ground mushrooms or cooked lentils.

For Italian flavor: Add 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, and 1 teaspoon onion powder to a mixture of 2 cups ground walnuts and 2 cups ground mushrooms or cooked lentils.

Health Benefits of Walnuts

Improve Heart Health: Based on research by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), fresh raw walnuts are rich in omega-3 fatty acids that help keep your heart, lungs, blood vessels, and immune system working the way they should.

Enhance Bone Health: Walnuts, much like cashews and almonds, also contain trace amounts of calcium, magnesium, copper, vitamin D12, Vitamin B6, phosphorous, and folate, all of which are essential in maintaining optimal bone health.

Boost Brain Health: Walnuts are the ultimate brain food. They have a high concentration of DHA, a type of Omega-3 fatty acid, which can help improve memory and focus. These nuts are also known to relieve stress and may help prevent age-related cognitive decline.

Control Diabetes: Walnuts are considered “diabetic-friendly” because they are very low in carbohydrates and have less effect on blood sugars than other foods. Eaten in moderation, the protein, fat, and fiber in walnuts may help limit the spike in blood sugars that often occurs after eating.

Reduce Inflammation: The polyphenols and phytochemicals in walnuts can help lower inflammation in the body. This has beneficial implications for many chronic diseases.
