Are Walnuts Healthy? - Glendas Farmhouse

Walnuts contain healthy essential fatty acids and protein. Whether you eat them raw, toasted or add them to sweet and savory dishes, they are a great way to enhance your health and wellness.

About Us

Glenda’s Farmhouse is an Andersen & Sons Shelling brand. For more than a decade, the Andersen family has been farming walnuts, prunes, and cattle in Vina, California (since 1904). We have merged with Western Nut Company and are expanding into new brands and other tree nut products.

Our walnuts are grown in Northern California, one of the world’s top English Walnut growing regions. Nestled in the northern Sacramento Valley near the Sacramento River, the climate and soil provide an excellent growing environment.

While providing our customers premium organic walnuts, we aim to support family farming and protect farmland. We farm and process our product using methods that enhance and care for the soil, air, water, energy resources, and overall environment

Improve Your Health with Walnuts

Walnuts, members of the tree nut family, are cousins to Brazil nuts, pecans, cashews, and pistachios but have some distinctive health benefits all their own.

Heart Health: Based on research by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), fresh raw walnuts are rich in omega-3 fatty acids like oleic acid and linoleic acid that help keep your heart, lungs, blood vessels, and immune system working correctly. Eating them daily can also lower LDL “bad” cholesterol and boost good HDL cholesterol.

Diabetes Control: According to several medical studies, the protein, fat, and fiber in “diabetic-friendly” walnuts can help reduce fasting insulin levels, improve diabetic neuropathy, and help limit spikes in blood sugar that often occur after eating, making them beneficial to people with type 2 diabetes.

Brain Health: Walnuts are the ultimate brain food. They have a high concentration of DHA, a type of Omega-3 fatty acid that helps improve memory and focus. They may also support good brain function as you age and help prevent age-related cognitive decline.

Bone Health: Walnuts, similar to cashews and almonds, contain trace amounts of calcium, magnesium, copper, vitamin D12, Vitamin B6, phosphorous, and folate, all of which are essential in maintaining optimal bone health.

Inflammation: The polyphenols and phytochemicals in walnuts can help lower inflammation in the body. This is beneficial for many chronic diseases, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and cancer

Sleep: Walnuts contain melatonin, a compound that transmits messages about the cycle of light and dark to the body. Although we make melatonin ourselves, eating walnuts increases the blood levels of melatonin and helps promote peaceful sleep.

Hair Care: Regularly snacking on walnuts can have significant benefits for your hair.  The high amounts of vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, and antioxidants in the nut can strengthen hair follicles and prevent dandruff and hair loss.

Add Years to Your Life: Regularly snacking on a handful of walnuts just five times a week could add an extra 1.3 years to your life, research suggests.
